FAQ

Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?

Yes, most modern smartphones support dual-SIM functionality, allowing you to use both an eSIM and a physical SIM simultaneously. This is particularly useful for separating work and personal calls, maintaining your home number while using a local eSIM for data during international travel, or having backup connectivity with two different carriers for better coverage.

Compatible devices include iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and most flagship Android phones from 2019 onwards. However, some carriers may have restrictions on dual-SIM usage, so it's important to check with your provider.

Will I lose my phone number when switching to eSIM?

No, you will not lose your phone number when switching from a physical SIM to an eSIM. The process is called number porting or SIM conversion. You contact your carrier to convert your physical SIM to eSIM, and your existing phone number, plan, and account details remain unchanged. The carrier will provide an eSIM activation QR code, and once activated, your old physical SIM becomes inactive.

Does eSIM work while roaming?

Yes, eSIM supports international roaming just like a physical SIM card. However, eSIM offers several advantages for travelers. You can switch between home and travel plans instantly without swapping physical SIMs, keep your home number active while using local data, and purchase region or global eSIM plans for better rates.

How many eSIM profiles can my phone store?

Most smartphones can store multiple eSIM profiles, but can only have one or two active at a time. iPhone devices can store up to 20 eSIM profiles with one active (plus physical SIM), Google Pixel phones can store up to 5 profiles with one active, and Samsung Galaxy devices can store up to 10 profiles with one active. You can switch between stored profiles without re-downloading them. Inactive profiles remain on your device but don't consume battery or data. Exact numbers vary by device model and software version.

Can I switch between multiple eSIM profiles?

Yes, you can easily switch between stored eSIM profiles through your device settings. On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular, tap on the eSIM profile you want to activate, toggle "Turn On This Line," and choose which line to use for calls, messages, and data. For Android devices, navigate to Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs, select the eSIM profile you want to activate, toggle the profile on/off, and set preferences for calls, messages, and data.

How can I check if my phone supports eSIM?

You can check eSIM compatibility in several ways. For iPhone, go to Settings → General → About and look for "Digital SIM" or "Available SIM," or dial *#06# and look for the EID. On Android devices, navigate to Settings → About Phone → SIM Status and look for EID or eSIM information, or dial *#06# to see the EID.

Alternatively, use the eSIM compatibility checker on your carrier’s website, consult the manufacturer’s specifications, or try to add an eSIM in your device’s cellular settings. eSIM-compatible devices include iPhone XS or newer models, Google Pixel 3 and all newer Pixel models, Samsung Galaxy S20 series and newer, and most flagship smartphones released after 2019.

Can I share internet from an eSIM (use it as a hotspot)?

Yes, you can use eSIM data for mobile hotspot/tethering, just like with a physical SIM card. On iPhone, go to Settings → Personal Hotspot, toggle "Allow Others to Join," and set a password to share your network. For Android devices, navigate to Settings → Network & Internet → Hotspot & Tethering, toggle "Wi-Fi Hotspot," and configure network name and password.

Can the same eSIM be used on two devices?

No, each eSIM profile can only be active on one device at a time. eSIMs are designed with safeguards that prevent simultaneous use, protect against unauthorized access and SIM cloning, maintain network integrity (avoiding conflicts in carrier networks), and ensure billing accuracy with proper usage tracking.

Workarounds include purchasing separate eSIM profiles for each device, getting multiple lines under family plans, using one device's hotspot for others, or using a physical SIM in one device and eSIM in another. If you attempt to activate the same eSIM on multiple devices, the previous activation will be automatically deactivated.

What should I do if my eSIM QR code won’t scan?

If your QR code won’t scan, try these steps:

  • Clean the camera lens and ensure good lighting.
  • Hold the phone steady at a moderate distance from the QR.
  • Enter the activation code manually instead of scanning.
  • Update your device to the latest iOS/Android version.
  • Display the QR on another device’s screen and scan it.
  • Request a new QR from your carrier if the current code has expired.
  • Restart your device and try again.

Manual setup paths:

Go to Cellular/Mobile settings, select "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan," choose "Enter Details Manually," and input the provided activation code.

Other solutions are to take a screenshot of the QR code and scan it from another device’s screen, contact your carrier for a new QR code, check QR code validity as codes may expire, and restart your device before trying again. If problems persist, contact your eSIM provider's customer support.

What does the “eSIM already added” error mean?

Common causes include:

  • the profile is already installed on your current device;
  • the same profile is in use on another device (one-time codes already redeemed);
  • the QR/activation code has expired.

Solutions:

  • check existing eSIM profiles in your cellular settings;
  • request a new eSIM/activation code from your carrier if the old one is unusable;
  • remove an old or inactive profile, then retry;
  • wait before retrying, as some carriers apply a cooldown period.

To prevent this issue:

  • avoid scanning the same QR code multiple times;
  • complete activation in a single session;
  • keep activation codes secure (don’t share them).

What happens if I delete an eSIM profile?

Deleting an eSIM profile removes it completely from your device, with consequences depending on the eSIM type. Immediate effects include loss of service (no calls, texts, or data on that line) and removal of the profile from device settings, though your carrier account may remain active.

For primary/main eSIMs, you'll lose your main phone service, and need to contact your carrier for a new eSIM QR code, with some carriers may charge replacement fees. For travel/temporary eSIMs, there's typically no reactivation available, as these are usually single-use. Any remaining balance is forfeited, and you'll need to purchase a new travel eSIM.

Do I need internet for an eSIM to work?

Yes, you need an internet connection for initial eSIM activation. For activation, you need an internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data) to download the eSIM profile, authenticate with carrier servers, and complete secure profile installation.

After activation, an eSIM works like a regular SIM and doesn’t require internet access, calls and texts work independently of an internet connection, and data services provide internet connectivity themselves. For activation scenarios at home, use Wi-Fi; while traveling, use an existing data connection or public Wi-Fi; and if no internet is available, visit a carrier store or wait for a connection. Some carriers may offer over-the-air activation without QR codes, SMS-based activation for certain plans, and in-store activation assistance.

Is eSIM as secure as a physical SIM?

An eSIM is more secure than a physical SIM card due to several built-in safeguards. An eSIM cannot be physically removed and cloned; carriers can quickly disable compromised eSIMs remotely; eSIM data is encrypted and digitally signed, and it's built into device hardware making it harder to access. There's reduced risk of social engineering attacks like SIM swapping.
